Namhan Fortress was build as an earthen castle in AD 672
(12th year of King Munmu's reign in the Silla Dynasty) and was called Jujang
Castle or Iljan Castle.
The high, rough surrounding areas and low, plain
central areas facilitated protection and comfortable living for the people.
Therefore, it was well-suited for becoming a fortress area.
Namhan Fortress
was designated as Gyeongdo-Bojanji for the first time in 1621 (13th year of
Prince Gwanghae's reign in the early Joseon Dynasty). The earthen castle was
renovated into a stone castle to block the intrusion of the Later Jin Dynasty.
After Yi Gwal's riot, the threat from the Later Jin Dynasty gradually increased.
Namhan Fortress construction using stones was completed in 16 (4th year of
King Injo's reign). |
